Our Women’s Wool Coats

A double-breasted coat has two columns of buttons and an overlapping front, which adds an extra layer of wool across the chest and gives a structured, tailored shape. Both of our current wool coats use this classic design:

  • Black wool double-breasted coat – the most versatile choice, easy to wear over jeans, trousers or dresses.

  • Brown wool double-breasted coat – a warmer, earthier tone that pairs well with cream knitwear, dark denim and tan boots.

Wool and Leather Coats: Leather Trim, Leather Sleeves and Hybrid Styles

A wool and leather coat combines a wool body with leather details such as sleeves, collar, cuffs, pocket trim or buttons. Wool provides warmth and soft drape. Leather adds wind resistance, durability and contrast.

  • Wool coat with leather trim: leather is used only on edges and accents, such as the collar, cuffs or pocket piping. The look stays classic with a subtle upgrade.

  • Wool coat with leather sleeves: a wool torso with leather arms. This is the same construction behind varsity jackets, and it works well when you want a sportier, more graphic shape.

  • Full wool-and-leather coat: leather panels combined across the body for a bolder statement piece.

What to check when buying: confirm the leather is genuine rather than faux, check the wool percentage on the fabric label, look for a full lining, and inspect how the leather and wool panels are stitched together. Leather parts may need specialist cleaning, so follow the care label.

If you love the wool-and-leather sleeve look, our women’s varsity jackets use the same idea. Want a specific wool-and-leather combination? Ask about our make-to-order service.

Wool Coat vs Felt Coat

Felt is made by pressing wool fibers together into a dense, non-woven fabric, while many wool coats use woven wool. Felt and boiled wool are warm, soft-edged and resistant to fraying. A felt coat is still a wool coat, just with a different texture.

Are Wool Coats Warm?

Yes. Wool fibers trap air and keep insulating even when slightly damp, and the fabric breathes so you are less likely to overheat indoors. How warm a coat feels depends on four things: fabric weight, wool percentage, lining and fit. A lined wool coat over a sweater is enough for most cold climates. In extreme cold, add thermal layers or consider a shearling jacket for the coldest days.

Are Wool Coats Waterproof?

No, wool coats are water-resistant, not waterproof. Tightly woven wool sheds light rain and snow, but heavy rain will soak through. If your coat gets wet, shake it out and let it dry naturally on a wide hanger, away from radiators or direct heat. For regular downpours, a leather trench coat is usually the better choice.

How Much Do Women’s Wool Coats Cost?

Prices depend on wool content, construction and brand. In general, thin wool-blend coats can be found for under $100, but they are usually mostly synthetic. Coats with higher wool content and better finishing typically cost several hundred dollars, and designer coats cost more. Our women’s wool coats are currently priced from $285, reduced from $450.

Tip: before buying any wool coat, check the fabric label for wool percentage, the lining material and the quality of the buttons and seams. See current discounts on our sale page.

Women’s Wool Coat Size and Fit Guide (Plus Size, Petite and Tall)

  1. Measure your bust, waist, hips, shoulder width and sleeve length.

  2. Compare with our women’s size chart or use the jacket size calculator.

  3. Check the shoulders: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder.

  4. Allow for layers: if you plan to wear chunky knits or thermals underneath, choose the next size up.

  5. Test the sleeve: it should reach the wrist bone with your arms relaxed.

Plus size: our women’s wool coats are available up to 5XL. Petite: mid-thigh to knee lengths keep proportions balanced. Tall: midi and maxi lengths work best, and you should check sleeve length carefully.

Women’s Wool Coat Colors

Our current colors are black and brown. Black is the most versatile and works with almost every outfit. Brown adds warmth and pairs well with cream, rust, caramel and dark denim. Neutral shades like camel and grey are also classic wool coat colors if you are comparing styles elsewhere.

Hood, Belt or Fur Collar?

Classic wool coats usually skip hoods, so a scarf or hat is the common alternative. Details such as belts and collars vary by style, so check each product page. For fur-style collar warmth, look at shearling styles, or contact us about a custom request.

Women’s Wool Coat Outfit Ideas

  • Office: black double-breasted coat over a blazer or tailored trousers, with ankle boots.

  • Weekend: brown wool coat with a cream turtleneck, straight jeans and boots.

  • Evening: black coat over a dress or leather pants, with a structured tote bag.

  • Cold-day layering: chunky sweater under a coat sized up, finished with leather gloves.

How to Care for a Wool Coat

  1. Dry clean when needed instead of machine washing, and always follow the care label.

  2. Brush after wearing with a soft clothes brush to remove lint and dust.

  3. Hang on a wide, padded hanger to protect the shoulders.

  4. Keep away from direct heat, including radiators and sunlight.

  5. Store in a breathable garment bag in the off-season, never plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best women’s wool coat for winter?

The best winter wool coat has a high wool content, a full lining and a length that reaches at least mid-thigh.
